Who would be the audience for your media product?
The target audience for most psychological Thrillers are usually people who are 18+. This is because they include a lot of violence and psychological issues that may be too disturbing or confusing for a younger audience. This may be clearly shown on the back of DVD covers or Film posters stating the age rating and why, e.g. : 'Contains extreme violence' or 'scenes of a sexual nature'.
The audience that we aim to attract with our Thriller, Parallel, is young male/female adults ranging from ages 15 to 25. Our film will have the rating of 15+ because it contains aspects of violence, death and sensitive psychological issues. We thought that having the rating of 18+ would be too high, as it doesn't include over explicit content.
Films with a similar target audience include:
'Donnie Darko'
'The woman in black'
'Vacancy'
'Fatal attraction'
Due to our film being a Psychological Thriller, we did some research on the audience that were more specific to this sub genre.
In a psychological Thriller, the suspect does not use physical strength but psychology to get their victim. This challenges the mental state of those in the film, but also the audiences' too. The audience is required to do more intellectual thinking and although we found out that the majority of those who were expected to watch psychological Thrillers were aged 25+, we chose to challenge this target audience with our film.
An example of a psychological Thriller is:
Our Target audience:
This is an example Facebook page of someone who we'd expect to go and view our Thriller. A young adult/student, aged 15+ would be most suited because:
- The characters in our Thriller are also young adults, therefore, this makes the audience relate to the characters and story line more.
- Due to the main character being a female, It was only expected that the movie would be better suited for a female viewer. However, our Thriller could also be enjoyed by male viewers too.
- Due to our film being an Independent British film, we thought that because it was a lot closer to home, creating a fan base amongst younger viewers would be more beneficial in terms of cinema screenings and ratings - Helping us promote the movie a lot better/faster because young adults are more likely to use social networking sites
